Even though new types of electrochemical power sources are underway, lithium-ion batteries still dominate the market and seem to continue to do so in the foreseeable future. The use of flammable compounds in lithium-ion batteries inevitably raises safety issues prompting multi-angled research to minimise and eliminate the risks. In a new review published in Russian Chemical Reviews, we discuss the studies focused on the use of temperature- and voltage-responsive materials as internal protective components in batteries.
